A small lowering of the groundwater level can destroy house foundations

As early as 2,000 years ago, the great Roman architect Vitruvius wrote that wooden piles must be driven down into mud or waterlogged ground and buried completely in order to create a stable foundation for buildings. A new thesis from the University of Gothenburg shows that wooden pile foundations show visible damage after only a year if the groundwater level lowers.

New membrane improves reversibility of zinc-air batteries

The long-standing challenges to the practical implementation of rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are the electrochemical irreversibility of the Zn anode and degradation of the air cathodes in alkaline electrolyte, which eventually result in poor cycle life and low cell voltage.

First West African hydro-solar plant deployed in Ghana

The first West African hydro-solar plant was deployed in Ghana in January, with technical support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Once its full capacity is brought online, this hydro-solar plant will put Ghana on track to cut its power sector greenhouse gas emissions by 235,000 tons per year.

Computer vision technique to enhance 3D understanding of 2D images

Upon looking at photographs and drawing on their past experiences, humans can often perceive depth in pictures that are, themselves, perfectly flat. However, getting computers to do the same thing has proved quite challenging.

A transfer-printing technique to integrate metal electrodes and 2D materials on a wafer-scale

Metal-semiconductor junctions, electrical junctions in which a metal is linked to a semiconducting material, are crucial components for numerous electronic and optoelectronic devices. While they are now widely produced and used worldwide, creating good quality junctions that integrate conventional metals and 2D semiconductors can be difficult.
