US Justice Dept sues to block JetBlue-Spirit airline merger

The US Justice Department has filed a lawsuit to block the proposed merger between JetBlue and Spirit airlines. The Justice Department filed the lawsuit on Tuesday, citing concerns that the merger would reduce competition and lead to higher prices for consumers.

JetBlue and Spirit airlines announced the merger in May 2021, saying it would create a more competitive airline with a larger network and broader customer base.

The proposed merger would have combined two of the largest low-cost carriers in the US, with JetBlue based in New York and Spirit based in Florida.

In a statement, the Justice Department said it had "serious concerns" about the merger and that it would "eliminate competition that has been critical to the low-cost airline industry's success."

The airlines have said they will fight the lawsuit, arguing that the merger would benefit consumers by providing more options and lower prices.

This is not the first time the Justice Department has sought to block a merger between airlines. In 2013, the department sued to stop the merger between American Airlines and US Airways, but the merger was eventually approved.

The case is now in the hands of a federal judge, who will decide whether to grant the Justice Department's request for a temporary restraining order to stop the merger while the case is being heard.
