Musk Defends Paid Twitter as Blue Tick Ultimatum Looms
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has defended his paid Twitter activity as Twitter announces a new policy for verified accounts.
Twitter's blue tick, or verified account, is a symbol of authenticity and credibility on the platform. It is awarded to accounts that meet certain criteria, such as being of public interest, having a complete profile, and having a confirmed email address and phone number.
However, Twitter has recently announced that it will be reviewing its verification policy and may remove the blue tick from accounts that do not meet its updated criteria.
This has led to speculation that Musk, who has been known to engage in paid Twitter activity, may lose his blue tick. Musk has previously been criticized for his tweets, including those that have led to legal action against him and his companies.
Despite this, Musk has defended his paid Twitter activity, stating that it is a way for him to communicate directly with his followers and that he believes in the power of social media.
"The point of Twitter is to get information out quickly and accurately, and I think that's a good thing," Musk said in a recent interview. "I don't think it's fair to say that just because someone is paying for their tweets, they're not being authentic."
Twitter's updated verification policy is set to go into effect on January 20, 2021. It remains to be seen whether Musk will be affected by the changes.
